For the second time this year, the expert jury of the ISPO Award determined the new award winners. 23 pioneering sports products from a wide range of categories made it onto the podium. The most important commonality: Most winners were able to convince with new solutions for the topics of sustainability or lightness.

On the test bench: The ISPO Award jury judging the products

Pants made of mono-material or jackets that biodegrade - more and more brands are thinking about how a more sustainable use of our resources could look and what happens to the products at the end of their life. This new trend is reflected both in the applicants for the ISPO Award, as well as in the award winners.

But also in classic sports topics, such as namely lightness, there has been an enormous innovation push in recent years through new designs and new materials.

For the second time this year, the winning products were selected by a six-person jury made up of industry experts and consumer experts from the ISPO Collaborators Club. The jury meets a total of four times a year to choose the winners of the ISPO Award from the applications submitted during the year. A large number of this year's winners was presented at the ISPO Award Exhibition at OutDoor by ISPO on June 12-14, 2022.

Adidas Terrex: The "Made to be Remade" Wind Anorak

Everyone will soon want this anorak
Adidas Terrex

This lightweight jacket is not only made entirely of recycled polyester fabric, it is also completely recyclable again. To achieve this, Adidas relies on mono-material. That means the jacket doesn't have to be laboriously disassembled into its components for recycling, because fabric and all other ingredients, such as the Velcro fasteners and yarns, are also made of polyester. Zippers or spandex were dispensed with.
Interesting also the construction: behind the main pocket is a tunnel, which allows the wearers to use this either as a hand warmer or to close the hip straps of the backpack and thereby keep the kangaroo pocket accessible.

The recycled material is Ocean Bound material, which is made from discarded and lost fishing gear that would otherwise end up as marine debris. The bluesign® product also features a PFC-free DWR treatment. But that doesn't mean compromises have been made on function. The 3-layer construction has fully sealed seams and is specifically designed for use in rough terrain on the mountain.

This consists of recycled polymers mixed with plant fibers from hemp and causes up to 90 percent less CO2 emissions compared to standard plastics. Silva does not dye the material, so each headlamp has a unique look. The energy supply is via rechargeable batteries or alkaline batteries.

Extreme performance t-shirt
Odlo

In this t-shirt Odlo relies on the fiber technology Nuyarn and combines it with wool. Unlike conventional spinning processes for synthetic textile fibers, which compromise the potential of the fibers by twisting, Nuyarn designs fibers along a high-performance core. This yarn performs better in all areas: In stretch, loft, strength, drying time and mechanical abrasion. In combination with wool, for example, this results in faster drying times, greater elasticity and better seam strength. Above all, the material feels wonderfully soft on the skin.

Bachmann Rodel: The Brake and Steer System for toboggans

Safe and easy braking on the toboggan
Bachmann Rodel

The simple ideas are often the best: The South Tyrolean sledge manufacturer Bachmann Rodel has developed a patented system for braking and controlling sledge safely and easily. The system works intuitively: brakes are attached to the runners of the sledge, which move downwards when the steering rope is pulled and grip the snow. In this way, sledges becomes safer and also takes away the fear of those who have little experience in sledging.

With only 175 grams per pole, this innovation is one of the lightest products on the market. The enormous weight reduction was made possible by the use of an ultra-light carbon pole, which is break-resistant and just as resilient as an aluminum pole. The Powerlock 3.0 closures are made of forged aluminum and can withstand loads of up to 200 kilograms. Ergonomically shaped cork handles are lightweight and comfortable to the touch. The poles have an adjustable length of 90 to 120 centimeters and a small pack size of only 57 centimeters.

The perfect bike pants for male athletes

An IONIC + No Stink Technology also reduces odor.

Schöffel: The Circ Pants Looop pants

Sustainability and the textile cycle thought through to the end with these trousers from Schöffel
Schöffel

What happens to a product at the end of its life cycle? Schöffel thought about this and created an example of the circular economy with the lightweight outdoor pants Circ Pants Looop. The pants are made of recyclable polyester and can be converted back to 100 percent polyester at the end of their use phase. This is made possible by the patented revolTEX® technology, a highly efficient recycling process in which polyester is dissolved and converted back into its basic chemical building blocks. This creates raw materials without the use of fossil fuels. The design goal of the pants was to combine the mono-material with the performance requirements of hiking pants.

The North Face: The Dawn Turn 50/50 Synthetic Jacket

A jacket that keeps you warm and yet never gets too warm
The North Face

The idea behind the product was to develop a warm jacket that can be worn during activity without getting too warm. It is therefore the perfect layer for high aerobic activities in cold and wet environments. Thanks to the synthetic down filling, the jacket keeps you warm permanently and is breathable thanks to the novel 50/50 construction. This construction allows a certain distance between the insulation lamellas. Combined with a high CFM outer fabric, this creates an airflow from the inside to the outside, which promotes better temperature management. An insert under the arm reduces the volume and improves the fit.

Tropicfeel: The Shell Travelbag

A backpack for every occasion
Tropicfeel

Multifunctionality is the basic idea behind this enormously adaptable 3-in-1 backpack, which you can adjust to 22 or 40 liters volume depending on your needs. So you need only one backpack, but cover various applications. A lot of attention to detail goes into the Shell's accessory ecosystem, which helps to better organize contents and make the best use of space. Its removable interior compartment with integrated compression system packs up to 20 percent more items and helps keep things organized. Strategically placed zippers make it easy to resize the pack. Plus, the Shell is made from 100 percent recycled fibers from pre- and post-consumer waste.

The next jury meeting will be in September

Brands can apply for an ISPO Award all year round. Four times a year the jury meets to judge about the applications. The winners are presented, among other things, in the form of a review report on ISPO.com at the desired time of the respective winner. The trade fair at which he is exhibited with his innovation is also freely selectable. The next ISPO Award winners will be determined in September.
