The Outstanding Outdoor application process couldn’t be easier: simply select a product, apply online with a video, send it as a finalist product and cross your fingers. Attention: Unfortunately, ISPO Award participants can't be considered.
Application period: 15 April to 29 May 2020.
Early birds will benefit until 06 May 2020 (see point 4).
1. Product Selection
Select your product highlights for submission that match the critera. Any number of products can be submitted. A separate application is required for each submission. Outstanding Outdoor will be awarded in the following categories in 2020:
Beyond Walking | Beyond Carrying | beyond wearing |
Beyond Sleeping | Beyond Camping | Beyond Mountaineering |
Beyond Measuring | Beyond Water | Beyond Training |
2. Apply Online
Fill out and send in the online application early. You can change or complete it at any time until the deadline on 29 May 2020.
3. Send in a Video
Send us a video that explains your product to the jury in a clear and understandable way. It serves only as an information tool for the jury, so the content is decisive and not the creation and professionalism of the video. Please note: The first jury meeting will take place digitally. Only those who convince here will advance to the next round.
4. Deadlines
Applicants who apply online by 06 May 2020 will not only benefit from a lower participation fee, but will also receive feedback for their application as early birds.
The closing date for applications is 29 May 2020, so please submit your online application by that date to ensure that you are participating in Outstanding Outdoor. Attention: You do not have to send in your product by this date!
5. Provision of your Product after the first Jury Round
The first jury meeting will take place digitally. Here, the jury will decide which products make it through to the product testing phase. In the second round, our finalists are then asked to submit their products and the necessary additional materials by 15 June 2020. Please allow a few days for possible delivery delays.

We award extraordinary products that truly enhance the outdoor experience. For this purpose we have developed fixed criteria according to which our experienced jury can evaluate each product objectively and fairly.
Round 1: Digital Pre-Judging
In the first application phase, which is digital, a maximum of four points can be achieved across the four basic criteria:
Innovation/ trend character | Purpose & target group |
Selection of materials - material costs and composition | Design - optics (colour and shape) |
Scoring: 0, 0.5 or 1 point(s) per criterion (equal weighting).
Calculation: The average of all evaluations of the jury circle counts.
Minimum score: From 2.5 points (average) your product reaches the second round.
Round 2: Jury Meeting
In the second round, in which the jury will physically test the products, the basic criteria and four additional criteria will be evaluated again. For each criterion a maximum of 1 point is possible, or a maximum of 2 points can be awarded for the two top criteria that are particularly important to us. In this way up to 10 points (6x1 plus 2x2) can be achieved:
Innovation/ trend character | Purpose & target group |
Selection of materials - material costs and composition | Design - optics (colour and shape) |
price/ performance ratio | Weight/ packing size |
Processing quality - form vs. function | Functionality - handling, safety and stability |
Scoring: 0, 0.5 or 1 point(s) per criterion.
Weighting: Double scoring of processing quality and functionality (corresponds to 0, 1 or 2 points).
Among these 10 possible points, particular attention is paid to the sustainability of the products:
Extra point for sustainability |
This means that applicants can gain an additional point for sustainability. For this criterion too, 0, 0.5 or 1 point(s) will be awarded.
The Outstanding Outdoor application fees for online applications comprise the fair registration fee for each completed online submission and, if you receive an award, additional advertisement subsidies depending on the ranking, which also covers our production, jury and climate costs.

Advertising cost sharing: for winners only!

The jury does not know your product and judges a large number of submissions in digital form during the first jury meeting. No easy task. That is why you should quickly convince the jury with your product. Here you will find tips to optimize your submission and increase your chances.
1. In Principle
Be precise! Convince the jury in just a few words. What are the unique selling points?
Be clear! Avoid marketing jargon, and rather describe clearly how it works and the benefits.
Be structured! An application structured according to the evaluation criteria makes it easier for the jurors to do their job.
Be stress-free! Begun applications can be interrupted at any time and completed at a later date.
2. Video
You want to convince? With a video you will succeed. It is your only opportunity to present the submitted product and the brand behind it to the jury of experts in your own words and in a direct way. This is not about a professionally produced and edited video, but about pure information. Marketing videos are not well received by the jury. Therefore: To the camera, ready, go!
Criteria for the application video:
Language | English |
Length | about 1 minute |
Format | DVD, Quicktime, AVI or other common video formats: 1920x1080 Px are optimal |
3. Deadlines
The closing date for all online applications is 29 May 2020 and the earlier the documents are received, the better. Because then the team will still have the opportunity to contact you in good time if they have any questions! Early Birds benefit from our feedback until 06 May 2020!
4. Product Submission after first Jury Meeting
After the first jury meeting we ask all finalists to submit their product so that the jury can test it in the second round. If you submit a product that is available in different sizes (especially for clothing and shoes) we would like to receive this product in different sizes, because we let several people test it outdoors.
Ideal size ranges:
- Menswear in M, L, XL
- Women's clothing in S, M, L
- Men's shoes in 42 to 45 (EUR)
- Women's shoes in 37 to 41 (EUR)
