The first steps on the frozen Lake Baikal impressed Dani Arnold very much: “The completely clear view through the thick ice into the deepest lake in the world was so fascinating and will remain in our memories for ever.”
In winter, the conditions around Lake Baikal are so extreme that hardly any athlete had tackled the adventure of ice climbing above the Siberian lake before Dani Arnold.
In icy temperatures, every move became laborious and took much longer than usual. Due to the extremely hard ice, screwing in ice screws “was never more difficult anywhere in the world,” says Dani Arnold.
With each day in the ice, the new routes directly above the frozen lake became longer and more difficult. In total, Dani Arnold managed to climb ten new routes between WI5 and M8*, up to 40 meters long, on the cliffs of Olkohn Island.
