Experts believe that over 1,800,000 kilograms (2,000 tons) of plastic waste end up in the ocean every year. For those who use it, the robustness of this plastic is one of its great strengths.
Plastic poses a serious risk to our oceans
It is one of the biggest threats to the oceans. For example, a plastic bottle takes around 450 years to degrade, depending on environmental conditions. But even then, you cannot say that it has broken down completely. Microplastics, invisible to the human eye, are left over. It is thought that there is now more of this material in the oceans than plankton.
The Adidas initiative therefore aims to develop strategies to avoid plastic. Winners of the competition will receive not only financial but also technical support toward the implementation of their idea. For more details, see this Facebook page.
