The apparel industry has faced major structural challenges for several years, particularly with regard to sustainable transformation. The discrepancy between product design and recyclability, and the difficulty of using and recovering recyclable materials on a large scale, require profound changes throughout the entire value chain. New approaches must be adopted at every stage, from materials research and design to production, logistics and establishing take-back systems.
Bosideng has repeatedly provided decisive impetus for the development of the fashion and sportswear industry into a resource-efficient, low-carbon sector in recent years, through continuous investment in environmentally friendly material innovations, CO₂-reducing production processes and circular technologies.
The company's progress in the circular economy is particularly evident in two award-winning jackets.
In autumn 2023, Bosideng won its first ISPO Award for its circularity concepts. The company received the award for its PFC-free 3L jacket, the 'Eco-Design Circular Lightweight Functional Down Puffer Jacket'. Bosideng used 100% bio-based PA510 nylon fabric for the outer layer and 100% recycled nylon for the lining. The jacket was filled with RDS-certified goose down. As all the other components of the jacket are also made of nylon, at the end of its useful life, the down and nylon can be easily separated with a precise cut for recycling as used nylon and goose down.
In 2025, two years later, the ‘Circular Design Fashion and Functional Puffer Jacket’ won the ISPO Award Gold. This impressive jacket demonstrates how Bosideng has developed the concept of circularity. This down jacket is made entirely from recycled polyester and is filled with 800-fill-power recycled down. Bosideng is working with new technology to enable both materials to be recycled again at the end of their useful life. First, the jacket is shredded; then, the down protein and polyester are chemically separated. This process facilitates material separation and recycling, as there is no need to cut open the jacket and remove the down beforehand.
Since 2022, Bosideng has been working on the development of recyclable down jackets. This improved recycling method represents a significant advance over previous approaches, as the chemical processing breaks down the used down jackets and regenerates them separately into recycled yarn and down protein yarn. This greatly simplifies the recycling and reproduction process and enables a complete “garment-to-garment” life cycle.
However, the latest Circular Design Fashion and Functional Puffer Jacket impress not only with its innovative design and the established recycling processes behind it. This gold-awarded product is the first garment to be certified by the independent testing and certification body TESTEX in accordance with the Chinese specification for the design of circular clothing (T/CFCAT 004-2025). Published by the China Fashion & Color Association, this standard is the first industry standard in China to specifically address circular design in the textile and apparel sector. The standard clearly defines requirements for circular product design, material selection, recycling and reuse channels, and aspects of social responsibility, all of which must be addressed during the design phase. The standard provides a practical framework and evaluation system to support the industry's transition to a circular economy.
As one of the leading institutions involved in the development of this standard, Bosideng is the first company to bring a certified circular design garment into mass production. This marks the first time that circular design principles verified by an independent body have been fully implemented in a commercially available garment. It is a groundbreaking and vivid example of both the innovative power of the Chinese market and a guide for the global outdoor industry.
A visible sign of compliance with the new standard is a blue label attached to the jacket.
Bosideng consciously initiated its sustainable brand development from the top down years ago and systematically integrated ecological and social goals into its business processes. The board of directors considers sustainable development to be a central corporate mission and has outlined a clear implementation plan for how the company intends to achieve its commitment to net-zero emissions in its operations by 2038.
Bosideng has introduced a product system that adheres strictly to the ISO 14067 standard, calculating carbon emissions throughout the entire life cycle — from raw materials to distribution. Through material and logistics optimization, switching to photovoltaics and low-carbon processes, and using more environmentally friendly packaging, Bosideng has already achieved systematic carbon reduction. During the 2024/25 fiscal year, its suppliers generated 1,329 MWh of photovoltaic electricity, and the carbon footprint per unit for the delivery of core products via express shipping decreased by four percent. Several key product categories, including down jackets, outdoor jackets, and sun protection clothing, have received CO₂ neutrality certification from the China Quality Certification Center (CQC).
Additionally, the company has pioneered transparency by creating a digital platform that allows for the complete traceability of ESG performance among core suppliers.
For Bosideng, sustainability is not just an independent corporate strategy; it is a comprehensive system created jointly by Bosideng and its partners.
