Children’s footwear is often overlooked in the outdoor segment — yet it’s where innovation can make the biggest difference. With the QuickGo GTX SL, Viking Outdoor Footwear has developed a kids’ shoe that empowers young wearers to take control of their own adventures. Honored with an ISPO Award 2025, the model redefines usability by allowing children to put on and remove their shoes completely hands-free. Built around a clever QuickGo plate at the heel, the design enables kids to simply step in and go — no laces, no straps, no adult help required. This combination of engineering and empathy transforms an everyday routine into a moment of independence.
“Winning this award recognizes the effort that went into creating footwear that empowers children in their daily lives,” says Matilda Linde-Monsore, CPO Viking Outdoor Footwear. “For me, it’s about more than design—it’s about supporting independence and confidence in children. Knowing that our shoe can make their lives easier and give them pride in doing things ‘all by themselves’ makes this recognition especially meaningful.”
Behind this simple user experience lies sophisticated construction. The QuickGo GTX SL uses an injection-molded TPU heel counter that prevents the heel from collapsing when the child steps in. Inside, a soft collar foam compresses under pressure and then expands to secure the foot comfortably once inside — creating a snug, supportive fit without manual adjustment. For the “step-out” motion, the same TPU piece interacts with the EVA midsole, slightly flexing to open the shoe when pressure is applied by the other foot.
The result: an intuitive motion sequence that feels natural and fun for children. Viking pairs this functional design with a GORE-TEX membrane for waterproof breathability and a durable rubber outsole for grip and protection. Lightweight, abrasion-resistant materials ensure that the shoe stands up to playground use, school days, and outdoor adventures alike.
The QuickGo GTX SL is more than a clever mechanism — it reflects a deep understanding of children’s needs and parental expectations.
“Designing for children requires balancing multiple factors: ensuring healthy foot development, providing support and durability, and making the shoe comfortable enough to wear all day,” explains Linde-Monsore. “Safety is key, but so is practicality—parents need shoes that are easy to manage, and children want shoes that make them feel capable and stylish. The challenge lies in creating a design that meets all these needs without compromise.”
The QuickGo concept addresses all these points: ease of entry, weatherproof protection, and confidence-boosting independence. For retailers, it represents a rare win-win scenario — appealing to parents seeking functionality and durability, while engaging children with the excitement of mastering something on their own.
At its core, the Viking QuickGo GTX SL celebrates movement and autonomy — values that align perfectly with Viking’s Scandinavian design philosophy. By translating complex biomechanics into playful simplicity, the brand sets a new standard for children’s footwear.
“From a retail perspective, it answers two needs at once: parents are drawn to the ease, durability, and developmental benefits, while children are excited by the freedom it gives them,” says Linde-Monsore. “That combination makes it a standout product that resonates with both audiences.”
The ISPO Award 2025 recognizes this thoughtful integration of innovation, empathy, and everyday practicality — a small shoe with a big idea.
