In cooperation with the flat knitting machine manufacturer Stoll, the DITF will present the latest microfactory workflow for automated knitting of shoe uppers. Based on a 3D mesh representing the shoe last geometry and predefined stitch parameters, a flattening algorithm produces a one-to-one 2D equivalent geometry. In a subsequent step, requirements regarding color arrangement, machine configuration and knitting technique are considered, resulting in a bitmap image which can be immediately processed in a design step with Stoll software tools. Finally, the software generates a knitting program and activates the machine. DITF and Stoll will introduce how the creation of such data in real time will enable entirely new perspectives in prototyping and individual servicing.
