With the Phantom 8000 Thermic HD, SCARPA succeeds in providing a professional and easy-to-use boot thermal solution for extreme cold conditions during expeditions.

Technical shoe with high comfort

People on expeditions on 8000 meters peaks but also in other extreme regions like the Arctic need reliably equipment. SCARPA has tackled precisely this problem with the Phantom 8000 Thermic HD and submitted a robust and technically exciting development to this year's ISPO Award. Foot and legs were considered in the development of the high-closing and insulating mountain boot, as was easy and reliable handling. SCARPA offers an integrated thermal solution with the Phantom 8000 Thermic HD. The high-tech mountain boot is designed to keep the feet optimally warm via two removable heated inner soles, but also to protect other muscles from cooling down with corresponding high-closing gaiters. The boot is technically constructed and designed for high altitudes.

At the jury meeting for this ISPO Award, these efforts by SCARPA were rated as extremely successful and valuable for expeditions in the border area. The fact that a well-known mountain professional like Nirmal Purja was involved in the development of the SCARPA Phantom 8000 Thermic HD underlines the special dedication in the development. And so Sandro Parisotto, President of SCARPA, was delighted to receive the coveted award. "SCARPA has been producing mountainering boots for more than 80 years, with which memorable pages have been written in the history of this discipline. We are particularly proud to receive the ISPO Award with a product that represents the values of our company. The Phantom 8000 Thermic HD is one of the highest expressions of "Made in Italy" excellence: a boot that has already become a legend thanks to Nirmal Purja's extraordinary performance on the summit of K2."

Integrated thermal system for long-lasting heat performance

The Phantom 8000 Thermic HD is the first mountain boot with an integrated thermal system. The system itself can be switched on via a power button located on the upper end of the outer boot. This button is easy to operate even when wearing gloves and is easy to reach due to its good placement. Thanks to a RECCO reflector, the Phantom 8000 Thermic HD is equipped with more safety, since it’s able to make you searchable to professional rescuers in the event of an avalanche accident or injury. The boot is well equipped against many different weather situations. For example, all materials of the gaiter are laminated with a waterproof and breathable HDry membrane. This prevents water from penetrating and reduces weight and thickness. A nice double effect. Another plus: The Phantom 8000 Thermic HD is currently the only boot for high altitudes that is 100% waterproof thanks to the waterproof YKK Flex Seal ZIP.

The boot is designed as a technical high altitude boot and is optimally suited for expeditions to 8000m peaks. Of course it is also suitable for further expeditions in other extreme areas. Arctic crossings and extreme missions in very cold environments are its playground. "We wanted to take a step forward, we wanted to create something that does not exist on the market today: a mountaineering boot with an integrated thermal system," Francesco Favilli Mountain Brand Manager of SCARPA describes the basic idea behind the development of the boot. "Our claim is: 'Keep your feet warm' and you will benefit from a lot of energy, strength and endurance. That's our message with this new shoe." With its rechargeable battery, the company Therm-ic provides the appropriate energy for the insoles.

Science supports knowledge in development

In addition to the involvement of athletes, SCARPA also relied on the findings of science during the development. The current state of knowledge about the human musculoskeletal system helped to understand and address the needs of athletes. Up to 75% of our muscle strength can fall victim to the cold. This leads to a reduction in muscle strength and endurance, as well as feelings of cold chills. "Our Thermo Transfer Technology is able to transfer heat to the critical areas. Muscle performance is restored, blood flow is stimulated and shivering stops" Francesco Favilli explains the benefits of the Phantom 8000 Thermic HD. "No shivering means higher performance and control. The risk of injury is reduced, physical performance and safety are restored."

Multiple layers: the thermal system is integrated into the shoe.
