One of the five new sports in 2021 is sport climbing. The "Olympic Combined" competition format was specially created for this purpose. The triathlon includes lead, bouldering, and speed climbing. The three competitions will be held on one day.

A total of 40 athletes (20 women and 20 men) have been admitted to Tokyo 2021. "I believe this is a milestone on the road to innovation in the history of the Olympic Games," said IOC President Thomas Bach about the inclusion of the five sports.

Surfing is another new discipline at the Olympics 2021. "We want to bring sports to the youth," said Bach. "With the many options young people have today, we can no longer expect them to come to us automatically." Making sports maximally attractive is one way to reach that goal. The world's best surfers will therefore surf in the ocean at the Olympic Games.

About 45 minutes from Tokyo they compete at the spot "Chiba". 20 men and 20 women from all over the world surf in one category each - the shortboard. The two-day contest will probably be a kind of US Open in Japan.

As is the case for most of the newly participating sports, people from the skateboard scene ask themselves whether Olympic participation is a curse or a blessing for the sport: there are fears that the Olympics could deprive sports of freedom and style. However, some skateboarders see the chance to gain more respect by being part of the Olympics.

Despite all fears, more than 80 female and male skateboarders will show their tricks and moves in the disciplines Park and Street in Tokyo in 2021.

Karate is a popular sport in Japan. In 2021, karate will give at least an intermezzo at the Olympics - with a total of 8 medal decisions. Whether karate will remain an Olympic discipline in the longer term, however, is not clear yet.

For decades the karateka had fought for participation in the Olympic Games. Hence, there was great joy when they heard of the approval for Tokyo in Rio de Janeiro in 2016.

Baseball - or the women's alternative softball - is just as popular as karate in Japan. In 2021, the sport becomes Olympic.

For now, they have reached their goal. But whether the baseball players will remain Olympians in the long run, is still uncertain. For both Baseball and Softball the 2021 Olympics are a comeback. Already in 2008 these sports were on the Beijing schedule.
