The first series mountain bike in the world, the Specialized Stumpjumper, has been completely redesigned for the 2018 season. How to make good even better, the American manufacturer has proven again.

Specialized Stumpjumper

In 1981, the Stumpjumper, as the first series mountain bike in the world, ushered in the beginning of a bike revolution and paved the way from the then still smiled at fringe phenomenon to the success story of the "mountain bike".Under the almost affectionate nickname "Stumpy", it has been turning the heads of mountain bikers for more than 38 years now and with each presentation of a new development stage an adult feels transported back to the joy of Christmas presents.

Especially the trail bike segment, which has grown rapidly in recent years and is defined particularly by the pursuit of versatility, has always been influenced by the further developments of this cult bike.

Who now thinks Specialized has carried out only a purely cosmetic, minimalist detail improvement in the top seller is mistaken.Todd Donatelli, global marketing director at Specialized even breaks the taboo and calls for a boycott of the nickname Stumpy: "Don`t call it Stumpy...it`s the new Stumpjumper."
Hereby he clarifies the new models rather high-performance machines than cozy Feierabendrunden buddies embody.

3 model variants

There were 3 completely new models developed which still have a certain visual similarity to the predecessor can guess, but come up with a variety of innovative improvements.
The focus here is on the 29er wheel dimension, but 27.5 er fans can install this.

1. stumpjumper
With 140/150mm travel (in the 29er version) it provides enough reserve, even if the trail shows its rough side.

2. Stumpjumper ST

With 130mm chassis (in the 29er version) it is the agile propulsion machine in the Stumpjumper family.

3. stumpjumper evo (coming soon).

Similar name, completely unique riding experience. It is the most rugged, downhill-oriented bike in the family with radical geometry (extremely flat 63.5 degree steering angle) and a suspension travel of 150mm at the front and 140mm at the rear.

The new developments in detail

  • Asymmetric frame design improves stiffness by 20%.
  • Weight has been reduced again (up to 500 grams for the frame
  • Longer reach
  • Silencer: The elaborately developed wave-shaped chainstay protection prevents the chain from bouncing
  • Larger swat compartment on carbon frame and swat tool integrated into head tube
  • New asymmetrical rear triangle. With new kinematics it is even better on modern shocks and offers significantly more support in the mid travel segment
  • New carbon layup. Engineers spent a long time tinkering to find the perfect stiffness/flexibility compromise for each individual frame size.
  • Integrated nylon tubing on carbon models facilitates cable/line routing through the frame
  • Commercially available shocks with normal mount and metric dimensions give tuners free choice in the future
  • By means of flipchip the steering angle can be changed by half a degree and the bottom bracket lowered by 6mm
  • Of course, it is also available in different women variants. These differ only by a different damper tuning and more specific products at the contact points between biker and bike (grips / saddle ...)

Conclusion

Specialized sets the bar with the new Stumpjumper again extremely high and fires with the 3 new development stages an innovation fireworks in the trail bike segment. As also confirmed by our short test, the innovations such as the plus in stiffness, the new geometry with longer reach and the new kinematics show positive effect and give the rider an always confident, sitting in the bike driving experience. The many small features such as the intelligently housed Swat tools and the extremely practical Swat storage compartment in the down tube round off our enthusiastic overall impression. Good has become even better!
