The Commonwealth Games Federation has appointed Katie Sadleir as CEO of the international sporting event for the first time. The 57-year-old New Zealander competed in the 1986 Commonwealth Games herself, winning bronze as a swimmer. She has been driving female competition as manager at World Rugby since 2016 and will replace her predecessor David Grevemberg as Commonwealth Games CEO from November. "I am beside myself with joy to be taking on this role," Sadleir says. The world's third biggest sporting event will be held in Birmingham next year.
At least 23 non-binary athletes will take part in this year's Summer Paralypics in Tokyo - more than twice as many as in Rio 2016. A record! In Maartensdijk near Utrecht in the Netherlands, the world's longest solar bicycle path was opened last Wednesday. The 25-year-old javelin thrower Maria Andrejczyk from Poland has auctioned off her Olympic silver medal to help a young child with a serious heart condition. The medal changed hands for more than 300,000 euros at the auction. The donation covers 90 percent of the treatment costs. Andrejczyk had only just beaten her bone cancer before taking part in the Olympic Games in Tokyo and announced after the competition that she wanted to do good with her success.
