Success and wealth – these things are what a fortune teller gave to the company Jiao Hsiung. In accordance with Taiwanese tradition, seers play an important role in all areas of life. Also in the process of founding companies: Their task is, for example, to find a suitable name that underscores the company’s success.
Whether through supernatural forces or through the great drive for innovation: Jiao Hsiung has been successful in placing itself on the market with innovative products for ball sports accessories.
Jiao Hsiung has developed into one of the largest manufacturers of ball pumps
Jiao Hsiung was founded in 1993 in the Taiwanese capital of Taipei. The first product that achieved patents in Germany, the U.S., Taiwan and China at the same time, was a manual ball pump. In the meantime, the company has developed into one of the largest manufacturers in the segment of ball pumps and accessories, with an annual turnover of 12 million U.S. dollars. In total, the company has 80 patents; 27 more are undergoing the assessment process.
Vincent Yang, sales manager of Jiao Hsiung, states that the goal is “to develope handy and multifunctional products that make everyday life easier.” In this way, the Taiwanese company is reacting to the pragmatic needs of athletes and trainers, to whom long-lasting and high-quality products are important.
An innovation that combines two functions at the same time and, in doing so, can be stored in sports bags in a way that saves space, is the double action pump. A ball pump and a pressure gauge can be used together or individually. The product is used, for example, in football: A Bundesliga football, for example, is standardized, not only with respect to size and weight, but also in relation to the pressure: The ball must be filled with an overpressure of 0.6 to 1.1 bar.

It is already the 15th Year in a row that Jiao Hsiung is represented as an exhibitor at ISPO MUNICH. “Our participation at ISPO MUNICH is a good opportunity to expand our business contacts in Europe and in the U.S.,” says Vincent Yang. The first European buyers of their products were one of Germany’s biggest team sport equippers.
Also other traders have Jiao Hsiung’s products in their ranges. The companies on the American continent are the largest buyers, at 50 percent; 27 percent of Jiao Hsiung’s goods are sold in Europe. Vincent Yang says: “If customers are looking for pumps, then straight away they think of Jiao Hsiung.”
In the manufacturing process, Jiao Hsiung has specialized in the injection molding process. Only in 2015, a new production hall was opened. The current utilization capacity is 1,050,000 pieces per month; the goal for 2017 is an increase of 200,000 items per month. The plant is designed so that the production capacity can be expanded.
Alongside the distribution of their own products by traders, there is also an interest in developing new projects in cooperation with customers, in which the Taiwanese company takes on the contract manufacturing (ODM) with the injection molding process. “In addition to the sports industry, other branches such as horticulture and the automotive industry are also interesting,” says Vincent Yang. The machines used are largely in-house productions and can be adapted individually to new products.
In the medium term, Jiao Hsiung is investing in energy-saving production methods and in the construction of its own chemistry lab, so that all products can be compared, within the company, with the strict international standards.
