JD Sports Fashion, the major U.K. apparel and sporting goods retailer, has appointed Andy Rubin as new non-executive director. The chain is investing in enhanced competence for brand development and global expansion.

Since early 2014, Rubin has acted as chairman of Pentland Brands, the wholesale arm of the Pentland Group which is controlled by Rubin’s family. Among the brands and licenses it owns are Speedo, Ellesse, Berghaus, Lacoste Footwear and Kangaroos. In addition, Rubin represents the European sporting goods industry as vice president on the board of the global federation WFSGI.

The appointment further highlights the extent to which JD and Pentland are linked: Pentland Group holds a stake of 57.47 percent in the retailer.
